Dave was adopted by Derrick Vincent Piears and his wife Margaret Mary Dilys (Vaughan); This would have been in 1947; In 1948 they separated and Dilys moved, witn Dave, to her home in Aberystwyth where her mother Margaret Jane Vaughan lived.

Dave was brought up in Aberystwyth until he left in 1964. Aberystwyth is regarded as ‘home’ to Dave.
